What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a relaxed, focused state of concentration
sometimes known as trance. It is a naturally occurring
state we drift in and out of in our everyday lives. If
you've ever driven a familiar route and arrived at your
destination without remembering parts of the journey,
or got absorbed in a good book or film and lost all track
of time, then that's trance!
During hypnosis, the body
and the conscious mind are in a relaxed state, while
the subconscious remains very alert and receptive to
positive suggestions. Hypnosis bypasses the critical
analyses of your mind so that positive and life enhancing
suggestions can be incorporated into your new behaviour.
Our minds work on two levels – the
conscious and the subconscious. We make decisions and
think and act with the conscious mind. The subconscious
mind controls our habits and holds the key to our behaviours,
emotions and memories. During hypnosis we can communicate
directly with the subconscious mind creating lasting
change.
During hypnosis there is a change in the brain
wave activity, similar to that time just before sleep
when the alpha state is entered. Your brain's waking
state is a beta brain wave, just as you are going to
sleep it changes to alpha and then to delta and theta
in deep sleep. The alpha state is a very dreamy, pleasant
state. It is not an unusual state of mind, and may
feel like you are not in a trance, or in hypnosis. During
this time the mind is very open to visualizations and
creating a rich sensory experience. The more real the
experience becomes in the subconscious mind during
this state, the more effect it will have on your waking
behaviour.
Recently, using the latest state-of-the-art
brain monitoring system, Neuropsychologist, Pierre
Rainville, from the University of Montreal, established
that the brain experiences several physiological changes
while under hypnosis, namely the production of mental
images, sustained attention and relaxation. The BMA,
British Medical Association and the AMA, The American
Medical Association approved the use of Hypnosis in the
1950's. Sharon Mc Kay, founder of Mindcoach is registered
with the NHS.
What is NLP?
NLP, (Neuro Linguistic Programming) is the scientific
study of human excellence. It is the code for how we think,
how we organise our mind, our memories, how we perceive
the word internally, and how we make decisions about what
we believe or don't believe. Put simply, it's the way that
people think and act in their daily lives. It has been
described as an owner's manual for the brain, and said
to be one of the greatest contributions to the behavioural
sciences in the last thirty years. NLP can help you maximise

an insight and perspective on the modeling of excellence
